5 Things To Know About SEO

February 27, 2014

In 2012, I was invited to give a conference at ArabNet in Beirut, Lebanon. The topic of my 1 hour talk was SEO for Developers. I prepared a quick list of things I wanted to talk about. That was 2 years ago, so today I reviewed this list:

1. SEO is common sense
Make a good website, include great content and share it.

2. Make sure your developer has a basic SEO training
When I say “Make a good website”, I mean to say “there is a list of things you need to have, make sure you have them”. Your developer is the one swimming in the code, he has the control. Make sure he knows what to do and / or you have someone to help him.

3. Social, Social, Social
Social is the new Location. Build your site around a social aspect. When real people share it, it’s a validation, computers will follow.

4. What’s in the package?
The content! So great you have a new visitor, did he find what he was looking for? Is he going to come back? Is he going to tell people about it? If the answer to one of the questions is NO, we have a problem! Let’s stay positive: your content should satisfy the user. You only see him as a number in your Google Analytics dashboard, but really it’s a person walking in your store.

5. Track and improve
Tools! Use the tools! Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Google Webmaster Tools. They are here to help you understand what is going on. Set them up correctly and run with them! They are your best friends.
